“Royal Mail Coach” by James Pollard (1797-1867) Hand Colored Print, Realism, Engraving This is an astounding, hand-colored print by eminent artist James Pollard entitled “Royal Mail Coach.” The artist’s skill is evident in the fine detail he was able to excellently achieve. Four beautiful, prancing horses gallop down the road pulling a magnificent Royal Mail Coach. Pollard’s execution and rendering skills are absolutely outstanding as the picture is brought to life. His tremendous drawing skills bring a touch of reality to his work as the human figures, animals and architecture in the background are very accurate. This creative work of art was drawn and engraved by the original artist, James Pollard. The artwork is on the original paper and the border is included with the original text. The piece is surrounded by a light brown mat that has been hand painted with detailed, colored lines to enhance the tones in the artwork. The exquisite and expensive frame and mats are individually crafted and designed by Le Chateau’s professional in-house artist. This incredible work of art is matched with a gorgeous gold and black leaf frame, complementing the rich tones in the piece. The matting ensemble further enhances the tremendous artwork with a lovely cream top mat and a sophisticated dark chocolate brown bottom mat. This wondrous ensemble measures 23” x 28.” This intricate and amazing piece is an excellent and impressive addition to any collection at only $1,050. James Pollard (1797-1867) resided in the United Kingdom. He established his reputation as a painter of coach scenes, which represent a valuable pictorial documentation of the coaching era. With the demise of the coach and the onset of the omnibus and railway, Pollard expanded his subject matter and began painting racing, hunting, shooting and angling scenes. He was the son of a painter, engraver and publisher, who immensely encouraged him to become a painter of horses. He was also assisted by the engraver Thomas Bewick, who was a friend of his father. James Pollard began his career making copies after Ben Marshall and worked in his father’s firm as a draughtsman and engraver. An event occurred in 1821 that altered Pollard’s future. Edward Orme, the King’s print seller, commissioned him to paint an inn signboard showing a mail coach with horses and passengers. The signboard was first displayed in Orme’s Bond Street shop window, where it was wondrously admired by the Austrian ambassador and led to many successful commissions after that. Pollard is also known to have collaborated with John Frederick Herring Senior on several racing pictures in which he painted the backgrounds and crowd scenes and Herring painted the horses. Pollard exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1821-1839, the British Institution in 1824 and 1844, and at the Suffolk Street Galleries. Many of his works were marvelously engraved.
