Vincet van Gogh (March 30, 1853 – July 29, 1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist who didn’t know fame in his lifetime, and yet today his works are some of the most recognizable, popular, and expensive pieces in the world. At the insistence of his brother, Theo, Van Gogh finally started his art career in 1880; in that time span of ten years he was able to produce more than 2,000 works. Van Gogh began his painting career with somber colors, but eventually switched over to his ever popular bright colors and unique style after encountering Impressionism in Paris. Most of his famous pieces were, in fact, created within the last two years of his life, during which time he cut off a portion of his left ear after a falling out between him and his good friend, Paul Gauguin. After this, Van Gogh sunk into bouts of reoccurring mental instability, which eventually led to his untimely suicide. Van Gogh is seen as a pioneer for the movement known as Expressionism, and has had an enormous influence on 20th century art.<></> This print is of the extremely popular “Starry Night,” which is one of Van Gogh’s best known paintings and the original hangs in the Museum of Modern Art, in New York City. Van Gogh had created the painting while he was in the asylum at Saint Remy de Provence, in June of 1889. The swirling sky of bright hues is the main focus, with its vibrant stars and moon. This stimulating sky twists and turns over a sleepy little village and its rolling hills. What appears to be a dark massive tree is in the left foreground, drawing the viewer’s eye to the sky, as does the distant church steeple. Both formations also create a sense of depth, due to their size and clarity. The print is vibrant and clearly shows the brushwork that Van Gogh is known for. His placement of warm yellows against dark blues really draws the eye. This piece has been attractively framed in a contemporary gold plastic frame that echoes the golden border that runs around the edge of the print. It is in great condition, except for the slight dent in the bottom left of the frame that holds this amazing piece and makes the dimensions total 20” x 16”. This piece is remarkably priced for an artist of this eminence. Welcome to Le Chateau Art Gallery!
