Detailed Description
Specifications

Caroline Lindsay (1820-1880) was a prolific early American artist who painted mainly landscapes of rural <></>America and European places she traveled to. “The Hut” is a wonderful example of the landscape paintings that she was so well-known for. This particular piece is a giclee printer’s proof of her original painting, reproduced without losing a single brushstroke or detail. In it a small cabin is shown nestled in a wooded area along a quaint dirt road or trail. The tiny windows and doors were drawn with tender care as was the charming chimney at the peak of the roof. The dense vegetation surrounding the humble dwelling allow the “hut” to take center stage with the stark contrast from the deep greens and browns against the creamy walls of the structure. The trees were expertly articulated with layer up on layer of green in various tints and shade, giving them wonderful depth and presence. The shrubbery in the foreground was rendered with the same layering technique, giving the landscape multi-faceted tones. The sky is simple with the subtlest sweep of diluted blue to give a sense of a slightly hazy day. It is truly a breathtaking composition further enhanced by the deep charcoal bottom mat and sand speckled top mat which surround it. The deep charcoal perimeter echoes the meticulous detail around the windows and chimney and the sandy color of the top mat compliments the lightest tones from within. <></>

The true piece de resistance of the presentation of this print is the exquisite frame in which it is mounted. The wooden frame has an aged appearance with its soft green tones and silvery texture which mimics the complex growth patterns of the trees and vegetation within the composition, while also adding elegance to the piece. Lindsay’s signature can be seen in the lower right corner of the print as well as the date “19 Feb, 1843.” The piece was also signed at the time of printing to indicate the number, 2/5. Including the frame “The Hut” measures 24 ¾”x 20 ¾.” This is truly a magnificent work of art at an incredibly low price that would be a wonderful addition to any collection of 19th century landscapes or watercolors.
